The hamfest comments could be an entire website, bottom line, in reference to the vintage gear and parts, only a minuscule number of hams build anything. In the model train world, there used to be kits galore, from rail cars and loco's to buildings and structures. Now, everything is prebuilt, even buildings can be bought fully landscaped and weathered, by all those slaves in China, plus you can contract to have a train empire built by professionals. It is rare to find a commercial offering in kit form except in specialized shops such as Micro-Mark. BUT...a comment was made about selling on Ebay and the like. The new IRS tax laws will drive us all back to the garage sale, and flea market, and maybe even to hamfests again. If you sold your whiz bang knobless black box radio on Ebay for more than $599, it now will reported to the IRS as taxable income. If you sell enough stuff on Ebay over a year that adds up to more than $599, it will be reported. Better keep every receipt you ever had if you sell stuff on the commercial sites, and keep H&R Block busy next year. I do not think this applies to sites such as QTH that requests a donation when you sell something, so keep them in mind instead of Epay.
