For years, the backup radio in a CAA/FAA control tower was the aviation band Gonset, crystal TX tuneable RX. Then it transitioned to a more modern, custom designed for the AT service gear, first with a channel selector, then with keypay freq. entry, one for VHF and one for UHF, both took up a lot of space on the tower console. The VHF was kicked to the curb and EdoAire mobile transceivers used for VHF while they held on to the clunky UHF set. Finally, a military V/UHF transceiver with a large firecracker antenna on the front, not much bigger than a mobile CB set, all keypad freq. input. That was 14 years ago, not sure what they use today.
