Cheater cords I have, and so far have successfully used them  with out the suicide event occurring.  While I have a set with gators on it, I still have a couple collected over the years so I no longer had to pull that clip off the plug to free it from TV or radio back so I could plug the rig in and work on it.  You know, in today's OSHA driving world with all their warnings and safety requirements, it is hard to believe some of us are still alive.  I built an AC/DC 3 tube audio amp when I was about 10 years old, out of instructions in the back of Boys Life Magazine.  No where did it mention what would happen if you hooked it to something also AC/DC and the plugs were opposite phased to each other.  It is a life experience to discover what does happen, but today you would have to be in an old house with non-polarized outlets to fully appreciate the lesson.
