Who can explain why? Somehow you are just drawn to some radios. Think my downfall was back in school in the seventies and my first BC-348 The last several years have been deeply into the Harris lifestyle with the RF-350K, URC-94 and now the huge rack full of stuff that makes up the RF-1110 amplifier, exciter and the 2368 receiver, lots of fun doing RTTY and the military nets with that rig.
Before that did a lot with Collins stuff and older equipment and still run my ARC-38, non-A version AM transceiver for the AM nets.
For some unknown reason have always wanted a BC-652/653 SCR-506 to run in the field, can't imagine using it at home as a primary radio or anything else except maybe for AM on occasion but just by weight and size I am inspired. Have seen a couple people drag out there GRC-19 sets to use at the Hamvention and think the SCR-506 may qualify as the heaviest field radio to take part in the WW2 AM net.
Perhaps this all goes back to something that I read once in the "CQ Surplus Conversion Manual" about the SCR-506 in that if you have it you got five hundred pounds of nothing!
Did see a Dodge WC24 Command car back at the MVPA show in York that had a SCR-506 set up in the back that was all a first-class restoration but have no idea if the radio worked or not.
In the military vehicle world, you have a lot of people who will work tirelessly to have every detail of their vehicle perfect but not care if the radios function or not unlike my M151 where a lot of the restoration and repairs are not up to show standards but all the radios work and are used on a regular basis.
Maybe it's a good thing I don't have a BC-652/653 SCR-506 set up because then I would need a GPW or WC-24 to put it in.
