I actually lived for some time with an aunt and uncle in Mannheim.
I'll tell you a little Christmas story. I think, and I hope, no one here, unlike the former Boatanchors group, will shriek
"OH the bandwidth!"
So my uncle was working for the German railroad. He was actually too old to have participated in the recent
war. He told me he was working out in the rail yard one day, he saw an American army truck slow way down on
the road. A carton of cigarettes was tossed out of the canvas topped back of the truck, landed in some bushes, and the
truck continued on its way. Some while later, another couple GI's with a jeep pulled up to the same area. My uncle
watched these GIs beat around in the bushes for a while, but they couldn't seem to find what they were looking for. It's
amazing how sometimes things get misplaced sometimes or just plain seem to disappear. This apparently was a case of
PX supplies "lost in transit or unaccounted for". Cigarettes were equivalent to cash money in those days, maybe worth
more than cash, and this was a windfall for uncle.
