I have the original 3 volume set of the Signal Corp in WW II where the story started prior to 1940. Quite interesting to read that the military had to learn how the Amateur operator handled message traffic, at the time, it apparently was a real cluster you know what. Here is the book online, use the scroll bar at the bottom to get around the pages and to the index in the back and look up the pages for 'Quartz Crystals'. Not sure if it is in this volume, but the story of coordinated communications, and in this case, lack thereof, compared to the Germans who went into battle with a tank able to communicate with ground forces, artillery, air craft, while the US used AM, FM, CW, that handset on the back of a Sherman, and landline CW to get a message out that a German commander could complete in one transmission. Oh well, we won anyway.
