[Milsurplus] Moment of silence, 20 September 2001

I've been out of town with little time to reply but here's my
contribution to the 9/11/2001 recollections:

I was working from home and monitoring the nets on 40M when a call came
through.  The Ham in NJ was asking if someone could make a call to
Rockville, MD.  I live there, so I took the info.  A woman in NJ had
been trying to call her fiance' who works at the Pentagon but lives in
Rockville.  All LD lines between NYC area and DC were choked with
traffic and she was unable to make a call to see if he was alright.  I
took the local number from the NJ Ham and called it.  The fiance'
answered.  He had skipped going in to work at the Pentagon that
morning.  I explained that his fiance' in NJ had been trying to call and
was worried about him.  He told me to tell her that he was fine and
would call her later that evening, presumably when the phones lines were
open again.  I got back on 40M and passed the message on to the NJ Ham.
Half an hour later he called me again on the net freq and told me the
woman was relieved and grateful to hear from her fiance'.
