Just a quick follow-up, not much info yet, as this is literally
no-sane-mans land...
Recently received a 15W 758 THz (758 Million MHz) source, and bandpass
filter. Bloody insane piece of equipment, I recommend nobody play with
such things. To protect those far more foolish than I, I've mentioned
the general specs, but not the item, or source. Such things are like
handing a pissed-off psychotic monkey a hand grenade.
With proper safety equipment, I ran some initial tests, the results
varied from ambiguous, to alarming, and truly disturbing. More on that
later.
Out of curiosity, again with adequate safety equipment, I removed the
bandpass filter, and exposed the source. As mentioned earlier, the
device incinerates the atmosphere surrounding it. Until I had done it
myself, it was mostly speculation on my part, based on a comments from
someone else who knew more, and a not entirely understood observation
several years ago. The smell of destroyed "air" is disgusting. Imagine
filthy skivvies, and stiff, well used, dirty wet socks, baking in an
oven. Maybe toss in some pit scum for good measure. Yeah, get a solid
whiff of that steaming funk right up the nose, and all I did was quickly
wave the area in front of the emitter my way... It's been about a week,
the stench still haunts me.
A couple of very brief tests this morning to determine generation,
output, detection, and downconverting. Output, check, it puts out.
Generates some heat in the process. 63 degrees in the shop, noted some
warmth, the area ~1" from the emitter hit 209 degrees in 15 seconds.
Gonna have to keep an eye on that. Detection, that was a theory that
panned out, so no problem there. I could probably quantify the
efficiency, but something detected is good enough, and the results were
overwhelming. Downconverting, no problem, I was able to shift the
frequency several million MHz where it's far easier to work with.
Tonight was just to test some theories. Can I put out energy at 758
THz, can I detect it easily, with no specialized equipment (special is
relative), my detector/downconvertor idea worked flawlessly...
Now to do some long-range tests with the detector/downconvertor. If
that goes well, then wait for adequate atmospheric conditions to permit
NVIS propagation at 758 THz (758 Mega-MHz). Those conditions are just
speculation, but research suggests I'm on the right path.
This all came to be due to comments long before the post here about NVIS.
It actually goes back to the late 90's, when I first heard people
mention "NVIS only works to" certain frequencies (usually mid-HF), and
that was based on severely limited knowledge of limited equipment, what
creates, and permits NVIS, and considering by far, the most destructive
publication on the matter, FM-2418, to be "the bible".
The books, and pamphlets are nice, but for anyone who can think to
step-two, none of it makes any sense, hence my pushing of the limits.
Unlike the DoD observations in the 60's revealing legitimate atmospheric
NVIS to ~260 MHz under atypical conditions, and my man-made examples
higher than that, relying on purposely set up operating conditions, in
truly iconoclastic fashion, I've chosen the highest frequency easily
attainable, and theoretically capable of NVIS, and hope it works out.
Why try to push NVIS to a wildly high 30 MHz, when one can just jump
straight to "a bajillion MHZ", and destroy all notions at once, forever?
All theories are based on the atmosphere being able to support such
operation at such frequencies, under certain conditions. Most tests
suggest it will, and research suggests the conditions will exist before
next Summer. I just hope reality plays nice, and the results are
definitive.
