I bought this book "Ritterkreuztraeger 4 Profile Hans Georg Schierholz", about a Luftwaffe "ace" radioman - gunner.
Unfortunately rather a disappointment because there is nothing about communications in this history. This gunner
flew 250 some missions, mostly in Messerschmitt Bf 110 night fighter, and is credited with destroying 57 enemy
aircraft. Rather than glorying in his accomplishments as the text does, I could not but think about the massive loss
of blood and materiel he worked. But what really struck me is how different the air war was for the Luftwaffe than
the ground forces or Navy. The book has a couple photos of the entire fighter groups turned out on the surrender day,
V-E day, at their base in Denmark, and they're all turned out in good uniforms and there are even smiles. I suppose they
had reason to be happy: they survived, and no debilitating injuries. The book says this flier was released from Allied
imprisonment June 1945. June 1945. That seems so different from the experience of the ground troops and even
civilian refugees and DPs of all nations.
This is all I saw on avionics ( my translation ) :
"In July 1943 the RAF began a series of devastating attacks on Hamburg, using so-called 'Duppel' [ 'chaff' ].
This consisted of billions of small strips of reflective metalfoil which were tuned to the wavelength of the
German C-1 radar. The nightfighters were thereby jammed, which dropped their attack success. After that
the Bf 110 G-4b was equipped the SN-2, which because of that jamming was changed to another wavelength."
