Here's an article on the remnants of war on the Aleutian Alaska island, Kiska.

This is a current article in Archeology magazine. I feel grateful that they
replicate the print article online for all. I bought the pint magazine last nite at the
J. C. Thriftway in Newport. This city is 10,000 population and supported by
commercial fishing and seafood industry and tourism. The store magazine rack
had a large number of Archaeology magazine stocked, and I wondered, "Are
there really that many people in Newport interested in Mayan pottery?" Well,
maybe so !

A year or so ago I looked at cruise brochure for a smaller ship cruise that explored
the Aleutians. The cost was definitely not low, I think it was somewheres in the
neighborhood of $10,000. Included was a visit to Kiska or Attu, now uninhabited
nature preserves where permission is required to visit. However attractive the
cruise appeared, there was one caution: the brochure said visit to the island
depended on weather conditions permitting. That's a big "IF" for an around ~ $10k
gamble.
