So he was, after the Luftwaffe ceased to be a great menace, assigned to the "instrument 
section" of the "armaments platoon" of the Medium Maintenance company which traveled
with the armored column. 
I asked him once about souvenir collecting. Apparently when moving, there was no chance
to stop for say, some leisurely stripping of aircraft or vehicles. Like at a large Italian airfield
they passed in North Africa. The company did find some ME-262 parked at an autobahn 
airfield near Munich, but they got their butts chewed for stripping out instruments; the 
planes were wanted intact for study. I asked him what the best assignment would be, in 
terms of access to "souvenirs", and he said the combat engineers. I suppose that job had
an element of its own risk too, like booby trap bombs and building pontoon bridges under fire.
