I received a tiny little 4 x 4 plastic envelope and the return address was in Kyrgyzstan.
Who do I know in Kyrgyzstan? No one! But it turned out to be a package of filament
type LEDs I ordered from China about 2 months ago. Is this a way of circumventing
tariffs? I don't know, maybe.
Anyway, these are pretty cute and may have an application for a radio with a small
window for the tuning dial. Like the GRC-9 or TCS. They want 2.85 volts and put out
a surprising amount of light from very small current. I tried with current from 4 to
6 mA and it was plenty bright. This was lashed up with 2, 20 year old 1.5 batteries.
I was so disbelieving that I was seeing the actual true current that I tried 3 different
ammeters before I would believe that so few mA lit up so well. I used a switchbox
with selectable series resistors of 100 to 47 ohms. With the ones I bought, and they
are truly dirt cheap, delivered, but you need a lot of patience, there is a small bubble
on one end of the LED. This is the + contact.
