Here's another radio, this one used by the mercs in the movie "The Wild Geese", 1978,
starring Richard Burton in the lead role, head of the mercenaries. The movie is not
particularly recommended. It is available in an unauthorized copy on Youtube but in
low resolution. Knowing what I know after watching it, I would not do it again.
But after reading the NYT piece about Michael Hoare, I wanted to learn a little more
of the story, even if a novel very loosely inspired by his adventures. Can you name this
radio?
As the mercs are escaping from Uganda to Rhodesia, in a beat up Dakota aircraft with not
enough fuel, the pilot radios 'Salisbury Control, this is 9 -Q - N - X - A on 6603". He lands
it with one engine left, it sputtering out of fuel, on Kariba dirt airfield lit by signal fires.
Yes, it's a fantasy, not a documentary.
