NickFound this link with a photo of the Nautilus radio room. I recognize the R-1051 or similar General Dynamics radio but the antenna tuner and other equipment is not familiar to me. Perhaps the tuner will be a lead?

It seems that the Barbel class of submarine was the last diesel powered boats. There were three in that class. all built in the mid to late 1950's which should predate SSB radio equipment.
Of the three, Babel. Blueback and Bonefish, only the Blueback survives as a museum boat.

Thanks Bill - I see that WW2 boats USS Cod and USS Pampanito both had the TBL-7 - what I am wondering about is boats that were built after the war - or were there any?Nautilus was laid down in 1952 and commissioned in 1954. I am trying to figure out what she would have had aboard for the trans-polar cruise of 1958.I assume a TCS set, but what about a higher power HF transmitter?

What HF xmtr was used for post-WW2 US subs before SSB came along with the WRT-2 and URC-32?
Was the SRT-14, -15 (or URT-2, -3) ever used aboard subs? Or were TBL xmtrs still installed on boats built in the late 1950s (like USS Nautilus). Or??
