[Milsurplus] Heterodyne Frequency Meters

Well, not totally sure about that.  Perhaps this was the original 1910 intent but as the equipment list expanded between the two world wars,  adjustments were obviously made.  This problem is mentioned in the URL and "patches" were added periodically to allow the system to "soldier, err sail" on until it was finally abandoned a year or so after the start of WW2.
For example:

A                Airborne Radio and Radar        AB    Airborne IFF        AI    Airborne Radar Intercept        AM    Airborne Radio Transmitting and Receiving        AR    Airborne Radio Receiving        AT    Airborne Radio Transmitting        AY    Airborne Radar Altimeters
Decoding the second letter shown above in the same manner as the first:

B             Ship-Shore IFF EquipmentI               Intercept RadarM            Radio Transmitting and Receiving EquipmentR            Radio Receiving EquipmentT            Radio Transmitting EquipmentY            Navigation and Landing Equipment
Adding to the mix:
L            Precision Calibrating Equipment
Not so strange then that the second letter in the designation agrees with the definition of the first letter.
Yes, further down the list this system breaks down again as equipment becomes more complex and less easy to pigeonhole.  But this is the reason for the follow on JAN designation system, isn't it?

The second and third letters in the Navy equipment name are not purpose defined.
