it's not too difficult to build a homebrew magnetron sputtering machine, 
but you'll need a decent vacuum pump and a tank of argon gas, which 
aren't normally found in most workshops.   Everything else can be done 
pretty simply as explained in this interesting video:

The same guy has a follow-on video where he shows how to do different 
targets and patterning (as well as sputtering metal on hornets).     
Copper sputters easily and would do nicely for your crystals even with a 
cut vinyl mask, but photoresist would be optimal.
