When I read about the diodes blowing and taking out the power transformer ( secondary ), I thought, why not use a link in the diode assembly, with a wire finer in gauge than

the secondary wire?

And what if you put like 3 diodes in a leg? Unless you have a massive voltage spike, only one is going to fail, isn't that right?

$12 Type 83 at: http://www.hamtubes.com/tubes/list5.htm

Build your own replacement from Dave at 'Manualman' : https://tubesound.com/solid-state-replacement-for-83-tube/

The one on ebay looks nice, probably built from the Tubesound plan.

Thanks to all who chimed in with ideas. The fellow in need at the Southern Appalachian Radio Museum only found Type 83's for $80 to $100 and was amazed at the prices. I thought it was a high vacuum tube, but, as noted in a reply, it is a mercury vapor as spec'd.
