Gents:

     All this print about quartz crystals reminded me of the 1981 IEEE article on the subject:  https://ieee-uffc.org/about-us/history/uffc-s-history/a-history-of-the-quartz-crystal-industry-in-the-usa/ .  I've read it a couple of times over the years.  It's a fascinating account of a program that, in my eyes, was almost as important as the Manhattan Project at the time.  Lots of mom-and-pop crystal manufacturers made - and lost - fortunes in the 1930s in this market.  The paper also mentions manufacturers' names that are familiar to us gray-beards:  Miller, Peterson, Bliley, and Galvin.

Nothing would surprise me either.  Further, quartz has been "grown" in the laboratory for the last 50 or 60 years which provides good quality control.  I expect a significant portion of quartz from the wild was unsuitable for various reasons.  There may be a case for stockpiling  mica.
