As I understand it, the main failure mode is the separation of the tiny leads from the crystal surface.
Otherwise, for a cleaning try, what immediately came to mind is a small ultrasonic cleaner, like for cleaning jewelry.

Catching up on this subject-
Have you tried removing and washing in vinegar and ammonia seems like they may over time collect :
encrusted with calcite, barite, or lime carbonates. I would try washing before tossing?
Just a thought.
