[Milsurplus] "CIA" RS-6 Radio Questions

I recently acquired an RS-6 set.
Have others employed a non-destructive way to net
the receiver to the transmitter frequency?
I assume the set wasn't designed for ham-type QSOs;
that the agent operated the transmitter at a time
and on a freq set by a schedule and did the same
when receiving.

Has someone already investigated using full-sized
headphones?  The little "ear-bud" thing is an ear-buster.

I've read that the set clobbers the 6X4 rectifier plates
with 800 Volts, and thus it eats the tubes.  Has this
issue been addressed in a non-destructive way?
