And anytime you are experimenting with feedback on a crystal oscillator you might be playing "Crystal Roulette" A simple crystal current checker can be fabricated. I usually use a 30-40 ma bulb and prefer that it not glow at all in the circuit. Those Chinese crystals may not survive in high current 30-40 ma circuits.
