I suggest you look for some early ham "ATV" handbooks. I feel pretty confident that something like this 
would have a "conversion" article with the before - schematic. 
Many many years ago I passed up an AXR-1. I was surprised to see how close to commercial TV standards 
all the tech specs were. I think if the tuner could find a UHF TV station then, you would be able to watch
it on your AXR-1 round screen. 
The ARR-3 and its Sonobuoy FM transmission standards and receiver design are also quite like the broadcast
radio FM standards; no surprise either.
