The post about the. BC-474 fun had me, as usual, reconsidering my downsizing plans.
But I ran the algorithm again and it cranked out the result: I do not care for the 80
meter band. Its looks do not thrill me like the BC-1306 and a couple others do. So we
proceed as planned. I have two BC-474 still I will auction. Also the RCA pre-SCR version
also.
The other night I was looking at a BC-474 chassis; I had already used to cabinet to
package a BC-474 I sold recently. This donor BC-474 I had bought maybe 7 years back,
out of Alaska. The front panel was pretty goobered; I wondered what they were trying
to accomplish with the crude holes. Inside, the receiver was intact but the transmitter
much modified. The transmitter mods were actually neatly done. It looked like a new mod
xfmr was installed, also a miniductor coil on standoffs. There was an FT-243 socket with a
5287.5 kHz rock. So last night I grabbed this chassis, wanting to harvest the 6V6s for
another BC-474. BUT...they were not 6V6, there were 3 of 3Q5. So the whole rig could be
run off receiving type batteries, apparently. This only deepens the mystery of what this
rig was going to become. Maybe some kind of Forest Service radio ?
I remembered I have a BC-474 someone converted into a "portable emergency radio".
The only significant change I saw was the FT-243 socket on front panel, but also the
whole radio has a light yellow colored paint finish, well done.
