Thanks for writing, Mark, and for your patience.
The sets were originally designed to add VHF
to then-common SCR-274N installations, so the
BC-950 transmitter has the smaller 274N connector
on the back. It was a simple, easy install that
required only changing the control boxes and
adding a couple of cables, plus antenn9.
When the Army Air Corps decided to go with the hulking,
black lump of a radio, SCR-522, with the requirement
of a complete new installation with a bunch of boxes
and another box taking precious space in the cockpit,
supposedly to please the Brits, I think they made a
mistake. According to WWII Radio Mechanics, 522
took constant "fiddling" to keep it working.
I believe that position is supported by how quickly
after WWII the 522 disappeared from service.
As far as we can document, the U.S. Navy wisely
turned-down the 522. While they had some pre-JAN
VHF alternatives, they had the 274N VHF redesigned
as part of the JAN AN/ARC-5 system. To fit the "ARC-5"
TX rack, the T-23 was built with the ARC-5 larger connector.
