Addendum #2.
Just got done testing with choke input filter with interesting results:
110 vac 150.9 vdc
115 157.1
120 162.6
125 170.6
130 171.2
Ripple voltage is a few milivolts - hard to measure.
Looks useful to me; 163-171 volts is close enough to 180, and works very
well. Varying voltage has little effect on output. I cut back the
current through the VR tube to 10 ma. so now the load isn't enough to
get under Ballast tube regulation, but who needs it? The capacitors
test very good, so the original arrangement is also perfectly viable. I
had a hard time sorting out the capacitor leads. Yes, I know they're
color coded, but after 70 years they all look alike.
