Just keep in mind that the antenna is also the resonant output tank circuit,

I was wondering how I would have designed the loop. 

If you placed the two slots on the back of the radio, slot horizontal
instead of vertically directed, and one above the other, instead of side by
side,  you could dispense with the special bend in the antenna sections, but
the antenna form would then be somewhat unsymmetric. But it wouldn't be so
unsymmetric as to weaken it structurally. -Hue Miller
