Here is a little experiment I performed. I have some quite rare vintage headphones.
I generally feel I should avoid using them, just to keep them from being even more "aged".
The technical term in the collector world is "salty", which means, "shows wear and aging
from being worn". Plus, some of these are just not very comfortable, and moisture also
sometimes builds up while you're using them. I think collectors should actually avoid
using the Panzer headphones with the large cushions, but...I know some will insist. It's
"theirs", after all.
I recently sold a couple Heil headsets and in refurbing them, I bought new earpad and
covers. I haven't tried the earpads yet on vintage phones, but the covers look very
promising. The covers are cotton, with an elastic band, kind of a "sock". The photo
below shows they pass the hardest test: fitting over the large earpads of a German WWII
flak crew headphone. This was the ultimate real test, as the earpads have very little
clearance where they attach to the support band. BTW, most people, I think, would
guess that the firm band goes on top. No way: the firm band is on back, and the cloth
band goes over the head, and fits under the helmet.
Next I'll order a couple sets of earpads and also some microphone covers and see
what fits and how well.
Photo shows Luftwaffe headphone L38201 with Heil Earpad Cover ( Heil part 'EPC' )
on one side.
