With the lack of swapmeets, I have more time to go rooting thru my own accumulation, which is a good thing.
I rediscovered this Navy accessory, something I thought I had sold years back.
It is a blinker attachment for binoculars. Model A-2071 Blinker, Tube Type. "Tube" here means shape, not
technology. It runs from 3 D cells. The flasher part attaches to binocs and the battery box, I assume, to your
belt or otherwise. The "send" pressure switch has no détente feeling or sound, and there is no "sidetone", so
you have to kind of imagine forming the telegraph letters and send "emphatically". I think I can do about 8 wpm
max on it. I guesstimate range as about a mile? depending on QRN ( ambient night light ).
I think light - signally apparatuses are kind of neat. I have a Navy signal gun, dual 115 AC / 24 DC, and a Japanese
WW2 signaling blinker with its own small handcranked generator. A friend showed me an Army WW2 era light
signaling device which looks kind of like a rifle. You wouldn't want to be testing that out in any urban area today.
I think I also saw on Ebay a kind of toy walkie talkie that worked over light beam. I could almost get into collecting
this stuff. It's clean, neat, and nonpolluting. I even looked up Navy binocs on Ebay and saw that I could get a 7x50
set which this blinker fits, for about $200. Probably better I should just sell it and forget going off in a new direction.
