Back in the day I had a real boatanchor of a signal generator (hardwood case
lined with soldered copper sheet as shielding, separate power supply) made
for the navy by General Radio with a 1939 acceptance tag. It used a 955 as a
rectifier to meter the output level.
WWII vintage radiosondes also used acorn tubes.
