I would guess the reason the HRO model was widely copied was that it was more mechanically simple, straightforward to manufacture
and more robust than receivers with a bandswitch. And thus also easier to repair. Certainly looking into an HRO-5 or previous, it looks like
acres of room compared to bandswitching superhet receivers of the time. Except for that National cyclopedic dial. The German model
was actually produced in small numbers, possibly high hundreds, probably well less than 1000. The Japanese model did not attempt to
replicate the National dial and also seems to have been produced in smaller numbers than their other communications receivers, from
what I have seen of their existence now.
