I received my N4FS call in 1976 when I upgraded to extra when they started taking away frequencies. Up till then an Extra was just a status symbol and I did not want to get it just for that reason. Anyway, a General served me well till then. I really like the N4FS rhythm on CW. 73 – Mike

There is an advantage to any N#xy type ham call that has an I or O in the suffix. That ensures that there is no civil aircraft also using the exact same call.

Almost every ham N#xy call is also assigned as some aircraft's FAA registration and call sign. There are a few ham-owned aircraft whose FAA call is the same as the owner's ham call, purposely set up by the owner. However, the FAA does not allow the use of letters I or O in the FAA registry in order to eliminate confusion with numbers 1 or 0. The FCC has no similar constraints.

In 1980 I got KK5F as part of the FCC's regular sequential assignment of call signs after I upgraded to Amateur Extra. I also got the associated light blue Amateur Extra license certificate from the New Orleans FCC office that was still offered then to go with my Second Class Radiotelegraph and First Class Radiotelephone certificates.

I was happy with KK5F as a replacement for my 1968 WA5WGJ call, especially for Morse. Although once required I never changed my WA5WGJ call when the USN stationed me in districts 1, 2 (FPO), 4, 6, and 7. Even though I've now been in 4-land for 35 years, I'll keep KK5F for whatever time I have left.

Mike / KK5F
