[Milsurplus] [MMRCG] 3kW Genset

cool, never thought of that. the crank is keyed so it only turns in one direction. Just like working on old radios you find a whole new "Lost" skill set is required for this sort of thing.
At this time the automatic regulator is not working, the manual regulator is just a huge resistor between the DC exciter and the field or stator or what ever that is. there is a mysterious black box for the automatic mode that I cannot make head nor tails of at this point. have to remove it but have no idea how it works or what it is.

Very nice, Ray! One safety tip when using hand crank engines. Never wrap your thumb around the handle. The thumb should be oriented the same way the other fingers are. Reason is, sometimes engines can have a little kick-back and when it does, it could break your thumb. If you orient your thumb properly, all that will happen is the handle might pull out of your hand. My 1961 MGA can also be cranked, and this is the wisdom I learned from the old timers.

Although it’s not directly radio related I just put up a You Tube video of my 1940 Hercules ZXB generator at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VB2Hn6clw6M

It’s a three phase 3 kW flat head four cylinder engine, for reasons that I cannot completely explain I wanted a flat head engine project so this is it. Also has the added bonus of you start it with a crank. It had a starter motor added when I got it so I kept it and demonstrate how it starts easy when warmed up but cannot imagine trying to start it when it’s cold or lost prime.

Although it would be a stretch now have a way to power three phase transmitters at home.
