Hi
In order to “redo” a HC-6 style crystal, you will need to set up to properly thin film
plate the electrodes back on the crystal after you grind the blank. The vacuum pumps
and masks to do that are not something most people have in their basements (yes,
some *do* have that stuff).
For soldered packages, an aluminum block sitting on top of a hot plate should do a
fine job of un-soldering them. A couple of holes to clear the pins are about all you need
to drill to make up the block. Tweezers are a good tool for pulling the can off of the base.
(yes, there is a bit of practice needed to not lift the whole crystal off the block …).
If you have a resistance weld package, the only answer is to cut it open. Normal diagonal
cut wire cutters will do a fine job if they are reasonably sharp. You now have to find
replacement packages and set up to weld them shut …..

This set apparently used a crystal mixing scheme to generate the VHF channels. There's abt 20 right in the 80m voice band but they all end on odd numbers like 3833.3 kHz. I would like to harvest the blanks and mebbe grind them to more popular defined channels like 3885. I recall in the past my attempts to open the soldered ones using a 100 watt iron didn't work. Maybe cutting them open? Some are not soldered anyway. What use: jeweler's blade coping saw? Dremel ? What think you ?
