Mike, the problem with car radios for AMBC DX is the very crappy dial markings, don't you find? They vary somewhat in the minimal frequency markings, but some few
have more frequency tics in the range about 1200 – 1600 kHz, I find. The good ones are really admirably built, I think, for a consumer grade item. But I have seen a couple
late, aftermarket ones with minimal circuitry, like 4 transistors total !
I think good mil – surplus receivers for BC DX would be the RBM-mf, RBB ( but very heavy ! ), RAX, BC-924 ( I think it is ).  I mean, among receivers with local control, no
separate control box.

I have played a little bit with Frequency Selective Voltmeters and they have great frequency resolution but the selectivity is way too high to be usable on AM and the front
ends I don't think, can cope with strong signals close to your weak one.
