The MOSFETs are speced for many amps.? Our B+ supplies can't source
enough current to blow them that way.? But it's a good point.? Once the
MOSFET is turned on, the concern is whether the B+ transformer and
rectifier are good with 50 mFd.? If they're designed for, say, 8 mFd cap
input with choke and 8 mFd out, nailing 50 mFd across the buss is
probably not a good idea.? A much lower value will likely work fine.
Good catch.

A higher peak-to-average current waveform increases the heating of
transformers (winding resistance), rectifiers (ON resistance) and
capacitors (ESR).  So it is a good idea not to overdo it with filter
capacitance.  It's not just the turn on surge potentially damaging
components, it's the repetitive recharging of the cap on each peak of the
line that heats things up unnecessarily.

I got a plea for help via my militaryradio web page.

Here is a brief description and with Tim's permission I post the info here.
You can contact Tim via email at tmallen at rd900.org
I have no other info nor pictures.  It was nice of Tim to contact me rather
than just haul this stuff to the landfill.

*Don,*
*My name is Tim and i work for a Reclamation District in West Sacramento
CA, we recently acquired a new shop building and find ourselves burried in
the previous owners communication equipment and military surplus. This is
something I know nothing about but want to see that if appropriate the
stuff finds a home. I am hoping to get some leads or direction on where to
go from here. The equipment ranges from numerous switchboards, to phones
and components of many types and eras although appears to be mostly Korean
War era. There are cases of vaccum tubes, tons of manuals for the
equipment, testing equipment and military PA systems, as well as truck
speakers and specialty bulbs for equipment, aircraft etc. There is even a
submarine sonar station. Any help would be greatly appreciated.*
