I would not at all want a batt box made of wood. I just don't think that can turn out halfway realistic looking.
I am aware Col. Howard years back had a metal fabricator make a cabinet for a TRC-10 he had. ( I have one in the
same condition, no cabinet. ) I have also seen the metal fabrication work of Robin Bartel of Oregon state, and it -
seems to me - is miraculous, fabulous. So it IS possible, somehow, if you find the right person and have the bucks.
But how to find the right person, who won't charge you your entire retirement savings?
The reason I know about the situation with Chinese military surplus is this. A couple years back, I bought some
WWII German Wehrmacht antenna elements, replicas made in China. Seems this enthusiast there likes getting
the measurements of such accessory items and then having Chinese machine shops make up the exact replica.
I'm not up on this anymore, but I believe the produced items were supplied also to sellers in Europe, particularly
Norway? This fellow brought me up to date on the odd turns of this small aspect of ascendant Chinese nationalism.
Now off topic a little, to the trade issue. Some economics maintain that a trade imbalance merely means foreign
investment in the U.S. However, with investment comes ownership. A college town, Corvallis Oregon, 50 miles
from here, has on the side of a garage a mural scene about 10 x 10 feet. You cannot see this scene, one of about 5
murals on the wall, when you drive past on the main drag, because the wall is perpendicular the road and facing
away from the traffic flow. The astute observer can make out from the animals, robes, and signs carried by
figures in the mural, that it has something to do with Tibet. So the Chinese ambassador on the East Coast somehow
sniffed this out and called the mayor of Corvallis to urge them to remove the mural. Sorry, things don't work like
that here - yet.
