 Greetings David,
I generally agree with you. The only point I would add is that there are static display B-17's on display around the world. There are also B-17's currently undergoing complete restorations to flying status. The B-17's are not rare. Owners that can afford the restoration are rare.

At the risk of stirring-up more "tolerance for diverse opinions" (what a
joke),
I'll pose a question:

If I buy the Mona Lisa, it's "mine" and I can do with it as I please.
Like wipe my backside with it.
How about if I buy a nice, new American flag,
which is now "mine," and wipe my backside with that?

I can buy the Sistine Chapel, hang McDonalds logos
all over God's angels and wrap Adam in a Gay-Pride flag.
After all.. It's MINE.
How about I buy the Wright Brother's first flyer and break it up for
firewood?
Or buy the last remaining example of an historic aircraft, a combat veteran,
than scrap it for beer cans,  or build an outhouse with it.
"Those things aren't for sale," one says (as though that were relevant).
And just why is that?

My point:  Is there a difference between a common "thing"
one can casually destroy because "It's MINE!  It's MINE so F U IT"S
MINE!!!",
and something that has become part of the joint heritage of Mankind?

Is there a moral distinction between my "owning," and destroying,
a common newspaper and a Gutenberg Bible?
How about between my destroying a common Cessna and the last B-17?

Does "ownership" dismiss all other considerations?
Is there NO moral responsibility to care-take that
with is part of our shared history  and is irreplaceable?

I don't know; It's for wiser heads than mine.
But it deserves serious consideration.

D.S.
