Subject: Re: [Milsurplus] [ARC5] B-17 Crash Near Hartford CT

There is no indication that the B-17 shattered in flight or suffered any kind of fatigue.  That's why they have annual inspections at the very least, depending upon the type of service the aircraft is used in as well as registration class.   "Nine-o-Nine" did not have an experimental registration.
As I write this (5:17 PM EDT) it looks like the #4 engine (Starboard, outboard) had a problem and the aircraft returned to base.   A B-17 with full fuel and 10 people on board certainly does not need 4 engines to land (or takeoff.....), and we don't know if she had full fuel on board.    What happened?  I can arm-chair QB from a Private Pilot's perspective just as good as anyone at this time,   but what's the point.   Theory based on almost nothing ain't worth much, if that much....something the news media doesn't care about.

The topic of should rare aircraft fly has been going on for decades.   One point of view is one's responsibility to history;  the other is private property ownership.
Warning.... I'm going from memory here.....   about 25 years ago there was a rather public flare up about this topic concerning an air museum in the PNW area.   I think it had something to do with Dave Tallichet, but can't be sure.   Basically the owner of the aircraft said he paid for them legally, they were his, and he'd do whatever he wanted to do with them.    Good Grief,  I have 35 years of Air Classics in the attic from year 1 to about 2000;  I need to pull them down and keep them near the tube radios.... something to read when the tubes are warming up.

It seems to me, these things are over-drawn on lifespan.  How long can
something be shaken, before it fatigues, and shatters in flight?
