One reason these & other planes are so expensive to operate is all the inspections, etc., to try to keep on top of metal fatigue, corrosion, etc. Many of those old warbirds are kinda like the story about the axe from the man's great-grandfather - the iron was replace once & the handle had been replaced twice.

It seems to me, these things are over-drawn on lifespan. How long can
something be shaken, before it fatigues, and shatters in flight?
