Dave - and all: listening to U.S.N. from Jim Creek, WA on VLF taught me the " / " character which I would have been unlikely to learn otherwise.
It's still burned into my memory:
VVV VVV VVV NPG/NLK 

Much later, listening to Pacific Ocean wx over CKN, B.C. Canada with perfect CW at around 20 WPM. I regret I didn't stick with it !
