OK.  How about a 6 V soldering iron?  The AN 3106-14S-2S is quite a bit smaller and cheaper than the PL-294 to plug directly into the generator.  :-)

And weirder still, +6.3 VDC is only there when the radio is turned off.  Maybe there was a 6-volt coffee pot that could be run off of the GN-57 or GN-58.
