That could well have been the case, as it has been well over 20 years ago that I played with it, however, that combinations seems like it should be pretty easy to repair, and, I was not successful at the time. 73 – Mike

Jeff,
It's not a dual-gate FET. I have my radio apart. It's a cascode pair: 2N3797 MOSFET (N-channel Depletion Mode) into a 2N3823 N-channel JFET. I'd sure like to see the actual documents, at very least the schematic of the RF No. 1 board.
I'm contemplating breadboarding the circuit externally, and playing with substitutes.
