[Milsurplus] WWII Navy RAL-8 Receiver Project

I ask, why is it desirable to improve the high end audio response of the RAL receiver ? Lacking AVC, it's not what you'd think of as the most practical HF broadcast
listening receiver.
Also, some years back on this forum I read about an RAL that had been converted ( sorry, for that word ) with FETs replacing vac tubes. Of course this would not
be difficult to do with a straight regen receiver. I seem to recall it was done by some military service school or training facility or something such as a demonstration
type project. I would have liked to have seen the schematic, but lacking that, even I could come up with my own. I would like opinions, would such a project be
sacrilegious? There will come a time maybe when such considerations HAVE to be considered, as the only tubes to remain in production, I think, will be ones
particularly for the audio market.
>From what I have read on the specialized forums is that it seems vac tubes still have a slight edge for regen detector, perhaps somewhat slightly better large signal
handling, but that achievable sensitivity is practically the same.
I have 2 RAL, one a very nice looking grey rebuild, but I am sure I am going to sell them, as I have too many other fabulous projects going already.
