Pretty interesting and surprising, too, Mark.
I made it through those same school years with nary one duck and cover, CD prep, or anything at all like that.
I got some religious indoctrination, but only one incident of the political. We had an assembly one day at school; I must have been about in the third
grade. Some man came out on stage in a VOPO uniform ( "People's Police" ), pretty sharp uniform, and talked about this crazy system on the other side of the border.
Maybe I had started the stamp collection by then, but I really knew nothing about the DDR. Graphics must work though, to help get the message across, because
clearly, I still remember this event.
I think hearing the talk you heard would have made a big impression on me too. I am wondering right now if that talk would have started me worrying about enemy
bombers.

We had uniformed Army Nike missive base officers visit our elementary school in Redwood City CA back in the late 1950s.
They came on the day we did our civil defense drills, air raid sirens, ducking under our desks, etc. A 16 mm movie was shown where a B 17 drone was taken down by a Nike missile.
Far more impressive than the movie however was when the highest ranking officer spoke:
“I and my men give you our personal promises that NOT ONE Russian bomber will cross our coastline. WE WILL TAKE DOWN ALL OF THEM.”
These were tense times. Home fallout shelters were being installed. Fear of a Russian attack was widespread. That unequivocal speech, and especially the personal promise, truly comforted a few hundred anxious school kids.
