[Milsurplus] Mystery whats-it adapter

An assembly of a 5-pin tube plug topped by an octal tube socket.
Okay, I thought, a tube adapter.
BUT- the continuity is:
5-pin tube plug, pin 2 to octal socket pin 1
5-pin plug pin 4 to octal PINS 3, 4, 7, and 8.

The octal is fastened to the base part with 2 screws. I took out the screws but because the assembly was apparently
soldered after the octal was mounted ontop the 5-pin, there is no pulling them apart.

Any idea what on earth this thing was for ?

I upended the base and along the outer edge, the standard wording,
"Licensed to the extent indicated on carton", so it appears standard tube base,
but the workmanship appears not to be home-builder, looks like factory work.
Looking down inside the octal socket, I see " 42 " stamped there.
I am just guessing, but some kind of military adapter, and there were so many
military electronics systems that this tidbit will probably have to remain a mystery.
