As for why UHF connectors are still used, I can think of several reasons:

 

1.       They are cheaper than Type N.

2.       They are more rugged than Type N.

3.       They are easier for unskilled labor to assemble well enough that they will work.

4.       There is a huge installed base.

Comparing UHF connectors to most modern connectors is also interesting.  I myself wonder why the the UHF connector is still used?
