This is stated in Fritz Trenkle's book in the discussion on communications receivers.
These books were I believe, published around 1970 something and by Telefunken, if I recall.
The importation of the parts thru neutral Portugal ended of course, when U.S. entered WW2 and no more National Radio exports.
