One of the things I found was a German ham magazine, "CQ - Zeitschrift fuer den Kurzwellen-Amateur", date 1949.
The cover shows a German ham's setup with an HRO receiver. The homebuilt transmitter has a bunch of meters of
various styles, clearly scrounged from other equipment. I was surprised on a couple accounts. One, that German
ham radio had already been allowed to restart, this when Germany was still occupation zones and many cities were
still much in ruins, and probably thousands of 'displaced persons' were still in 'DP camps', and thousands of German
POWs were still held in Russia. I am positive the Russian zone of Germany did not allow ham radio, and I have my
doubts about the French zone.
Second, that a German ham had enough money to buy an HRO. I am pretty sure even by 1949 the surplus ones were
still commanding a good price. Possibly this ham had some higher technical job which paid well. I think in this time the
inequality would have been worse, some people having such technical jobs and some people surviving with the clothes
on their backs. There is another ham station pictured inside, DL1LH, and his is one of the top German WW2 receivers
plus what looks like a couple MWEc vehicle MF receivers. There are some basic projects inside and these use, as one
might expect, the German military general purpose pentode RV12P2000, which was much used in their vehicle and
aircraft radios.
The magazine is on newsprint paper, has few photos, and thin enough to remind one of the very early issues of our
own U.S. 'CQ' magazine.
