Good Evening All,

Back in January I was working with a good friend on his basket
case 2B. We had a few issues (well a lot really) to deal with but got the
Old Girl receiving signals. We were both able to get together on Sunday
do some more work on it. Well the weird stuff is still happening. We
could receive good signals on the 40 and 80 meter bands, but the S-meter,
AVC, and Noise Limiter were still not working well. So out came the
Voltage / resistive chart. When we got to the 6U8 ( 1st Mixer, 2nd mixer,
VFO) we found - 130 VDC on pin 6. How can a grid have -130 VDC on it. We
used three different (VTVM, VOM, DVM) meters to check it. So out it came,
found a NOS one and put in, now we were have +.495 on the pin, not
perfect but close enough. Reset the AVC voltage as per the manual,
S-meter now working better. Now on to a damaged IF can. Pulled the can
off the coil, it was then apparent that the former owner had been inside.
We were able to dislodged the broken core, fix the top of the paper tube,
straighten out the bent can top. Now to find a tuning slug that would fit
and do the job. Well luck would have it, while looking through my stash
of IF transformers. I came across a small plastic bag, Manufactured by
Neida Electronic Mfg, IL-108. It was a 20pc iron core slug kit, with a
whooping price of $1.00 tagged on it. So we found one that was the right
diameter and put it all back together. Did a quick IF alinement. But as
we were finishing up on that the bands went dead. So we turned the old
girl off and called it a night. So when we get back together, it will on
to a full alignment and the noise limiter. Been interesting doing this
repair. Makes me want to be sure that anything I do on old radios is done
right. So the next owner world have to deal with this type of stuff. Also
makes me realize some people should not be aloud to Handel a soldering
iron. Will report more as we go forward on this project.
