Having successfully revived and made many contacts with the ancestor of 
this radio, the BC-9A, I can confirm that the key to stable operation is 
well-regulated power supplies, both A+ and B+.  The MOSFET regulator 
circuit and/or DC-DC converters make this an easy task these days.  The 
"stiffer" those supplies, the happier you will be.
